One of the most common statements I hear from social media people is that they struggle with separating work and personal life. When "doom scrolling" is literally a job, it can be hard to enjoy social media on their time off. They must stay on top of the latest trends, keep their clients happy, and constantly create engaging content. This can be exhausting, and it's easy for social media managers to get burned out. To prevent burnout and take care of yourself, it's important to prioritize self-care. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy and happy while managing social media:
Take Breaks
Social media never stops, but that doesn't mean you can't take a break. It's important to step away from your computer, phone, or tablet screen and take a walk, do some stretching, or take some deep breaths. Breaks can help clear your mind and give you a fresh perspective when you return to work.
Set Boundaries
This is the biggest struggle for everyone. It's easy to get carried away with social media and work long hours without realizing it. To avoid this, set clear boundaries for yourself. Determine when you will start and stop working each day, and stick to those times as much as possible. Also, establish rules for checking work email or social media after hours. There's no reason to respond to non-urgent emails and dm's, that person can wait for you to respond within the next business day. By creating boundaries, you'll better balance your work and personal life. If you don't already, talk to your supervisor about having a separate phone for work. Knowing that after 5 pm, you no longer need to pay attention to a device can be easier to achieve than always seeing work on your personal phone.
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is critical for overall health but especially important for social media managers. Lack of sleep can affect your concentration, mood, and productivity. Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and establish a consistent bedtime routine to help you relax and wind down. Set a "no screen time" at least an hour before bed so your body and mind know it's time to unwind.
Exercise
Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve overall health. It doesn't have to be intense; even a short walk or yoga session can do wonders. Find an exercise routine that works for you and stick to it as much as possible.
Connect with Others
Social media managers spend a lot of time online, but connecting with people in real life is important. Take time to meet with friends, family, or colleagues outside of work. These connections can provide much-needed support and help you recharge. For those who prefer to recharge solo, take moments to make daily affirmations and enjoy some sweet silence before you meet with loved ones so you have a full battery!
Prioritize Self-Care
Self-care is essential for social media managers. It can be as simple as taking a bubble bath or reading a book or more complex, like scheduling a massage or taking a vacation. Whatever it is, prioritize self-care and make time for it on a regular basis.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment without judgment. It can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Try practicing mindfulness throughout the day, whether it's during a break or while you're working. Simply focus on your breathing or the sensations in your body for a few minutes to help calm your mind.
Take Care of Your Body
Social media managers spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer screen. This can lead to poor posture, eye strain, and other health issues. To take care of your body, make sure you have an ergonomic workspace with a comfortable chair and proper lighting. Also, take regular breaks to stand up, stretch, and rest your eyes.
Learn to Say No
Social media managers are often asked to take on more than they can handle. To avoid burnout, it's important to learn to say no. Be honest about your workload and set realistic expectations for what you can accomplish. It's better to do a few things well than to take on too much and do everything poorly.
Practice Gratitude
Finally, practice gratitude. Social media can be a negative place, but focusing on the positive can help improve your mood and overall well-being. Take time each day to think about the things you're grateful for, whether it's a supportive team, a successful campaign, or just a good cup of coffee.
Though applying all these tips may not be immediately achievable, adding a few to your daily life is important to prevent a lack of motivation and the dreaded burnout. Remember, set boundaries, create time to relax and connect with others, and put the phone down!
