Creating Content as an Introvert

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

Scrolling through your Reels and TikTok feeds of creators vlogging their lives, one clip shows them dancing in the middle of a busy sidewalk giving no shits. "Could not be me!" I used to say, but why? I was fearful of judgment and the looks people would give me. These thoughts made me hesitant to create content for my own social media platforms. And yet, I would still create the content, but I could never find the confidence to push "post."

When I landed a job where 80% of my role was creating social media content, I had to change my mindset. Asking people if I could film them felt like I was asking the most. Sometimes reactions were a toss-up, some were thrilled, and some were just as shy as I was, but I always noticed I gave the people I was filming the confidence they needed to participate. For some reason, I never did that for myself. That gave me the wake-up call for me to be confident and proud of the work I was doing. Here are a few things I changed to become a confident content creator.

Plan Out Your Content Before Filming

It's best to go into your content creation with a plan. Figure out what you want to film and where. Do you have a niche you're wanting to be a part of? Looking into videos with similar topics, you want to capture and take note of how they're filming. What sound do you want to be in your video? Make sure you save them, so they're easy to find! If it's a "day in my life" video, run it through your head or write a list (best if you're like me and will literally forget to film half of my day) of everything you do and envision how you want that content to look. If you're lip-syncing a sound or dancing, practice beforehand to have fewer takes!

Create Your Content in Batches

With all the ideas you have planned out, it can take be time-consuming to film everything. I recommend filming at least 4-5 videos in one setting which will probably take a couple of hours, but it's less of a hassle rather than spacing them out throughout the week. If you want to go above and beyond, change your outfits and background when filming a new video and make it appear you filmed on a different day.

Bring a Friend

Doing the solo content creation was and still is the thing I struggle with. I just want a cute clip of me walking down the street without having to set up my tripod in the middle of the sidewalk. If you're shy like me and have a content-creating bestie, make it a date! I love having a day to dress cute and visit some cool spots to get content with a friend. We have so much fun hyping each other up and get to enjoy sips and eats while doing it! Plus, there's less worry about trying to prop your phone somewhere since your friend will get all the right angles for you. This was honestly where I became more comfortable filming in public and doing it solo. Sometimes you need that extraverted friend to shove you often that cliff of nerves that is holding you back.

Let that Sh*t Go!

It's easier said than done. I have learned not to worry about what others are thinking because, most likely, they aren't concerned about what you're doing and minding their business. If you need a sign to post that Reel or TikTok, THIS IS IT! You only have one life, why not capture all the fun moments you're making in the meantime?
