Instagram Strategies that are Outdated in 2023

Instagram has been constantly changing to match its competitor platforms. Many new strategies have come along the way that people are implementing, but it's important to know which methods are fading and no longer benefit your brand.

Here are a few outdated strategies and how to spin them for the better.

Posting a "New Post" Instagram story

The "New Post" story is something many people have started to attract story viewers to their actual posts and engage on their profile. Since more people view stories than view your profile, it drove in some traffic. Nowadays, it's considered cringe and may turn viewers off viewing your post. Instead of covering your post with a "New Post" gif, have a good hook to grab your viewer's attention and engage instead of baiting and waiting for them to bite. Quality is what reels people in!

Tagging Random People

People used this strategy to get more reach for their content. The problem with this was that people would anyone and everyone, even if there wasn't any relevance. Don't do this! Most likely, they'll ignore the post or even remove themselves from being tagged. Why create an uneasy relationship just for some likes? Instead, only tag people that are relevant to the posts. An example would be creating user-generated content involving several makeup brands. It would make sense to tag any brands visible in the content and relevant stores selling the products (Ulta or Sephora). Look into the brands you're posting about to ensure they're active on social and you're tagging the right ones.

Revolving Your Content Around Trending Audio

I get so sick and tired of people posting, saying, "Want to go viral? Use this audio!" Like, the goal is not to go viral. And if you're focused on going viral, you're not focused on the right goals. Sure, trends with fun audio are nice to incorporate into your content strategy, but you need to ensure you're still aligning your values and goals with these trends. Posting some B-roll content and slapping a trending audio is not enough. Some people will do this and wait for the algorithm to give them a landing hand. It's time to stop depending on the audio and know that the quality of the content you're putting out is what will help you accomplish your SMART goals.

Quantity Over Quality

So many people tell you to post once or twice daily to get more reach. But you never hear them talk about the quality that should be going into that content. It's enough work to brainstorm, create, edit, schedule everything out, and ensure quality content, but having the pressure to produce more can be overwhelming and discouraging. It's more important to have consistency than trying to post content you quickly put together sporadically. If you're concerned about posting enough, set a couple of hours aside to plan and create content. Batch the range and pick a few days during the week to post your content. Again, put more time into quality than the number of content you push out.

Hashtags

I'm having a hard time leaving this one, but Instagram favors keywords rather than hashtags for content searching. You can search for a topic, and it will provide you with relevant posts that coordinate with that keyword. So, what does this mean for your content? Instead of typing out a bunch of hashtags at the end of your caption, incorporate keyword-rich words within your caption that your audience may be using to search for content focused on your niche.

It's important to note that trends on social media can change rapidly, and what's considered outdated can vary depending on your target audience and industry. To stay relevant on Instagram in 2023, you must adapt to emerging trends, focus on authenticity, and engage with your audience meaningfully.
